HYDE PARK — The Hyde Park Community Players will hold a staged reading of Tony Kushner’s “Slavs!” on Friday.

“Setting his play in a darkly fantastic version of Soviet collapse and perestroika, Kushner asks us to wonder why our greatest aspirations always go so terribly wrong,” according to the Players' website. “’Slavs!’ was published at about the same time as 'Angels in America' and shares a family resemblance with the world of those plays.”

The community theater company will start the staged reading at 5 p.m. at Augustana Lutheran Church, 5500 S. Woodlawn Ave.

The reading is part of the monthly reading series by the community players.

Tickets are $5.
