CHICAGO — A man is in custody after he hit two women in the face with a hammer near Navy Pier Tuesday, police said.

Two 55-year-old women were walking on the bike path in the 500 block of North Lake Shore Drive around 6:30 p.m. when the man attacked them with the hammer, said Officer Janel Sedevic, a police spokeswoman. The man ran off but was caught by police, Sedevic said.

Both women were taken to Northwestern Hospital in serious condition, Sedevic said.
