ENGLEWOOD — Helping Organize People of Everywhere on Monday began processing applications for the Low-Income Energy Assistance Program, which provides financial help for residents who need help paying their utility bills.

Applications, which will be processed by the nonprofit until July 25, must be filled out in person at the organization's office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays at 6921 S. Halsted St. or at Bethlehem Star Missionary Baptist Church, 9231 S. Cottage Grove Ave.

Applicants must bring proof of income for the last 30 days, a recent utility bill (gas or electric), Social Security cards for all household members and original birth certificates for children. Those who are disabled must bring a medical statement from a physician stating their disability.

The organization was founded by the Rev. Roosevelt Watkins, pastor of the church, who said residents eligible to apply include those who are low-income, disabled, parents or guardians of children ages 5 or younger, and seniors ages 60 and older.

"Last year we had over 2,000 people from Englewood apply with us, and I don't expect any fewer people this year. The economy has made the need for help even greater," Watkins said. "People must be able to sustain basic living conditions because nowadays it's all about survival."
