LINCOLN SQUARE — The American Community Gardening Association returns to its Chicago roots for the organization's 35th annual conference Aug. 7-10 at the Field Museum.

Early-bird registration discounts are available through Tuesday for the event, which includes a variety of workshops and tours aimed at anyone interested in starting, maintaining or expanding a community garden.

Among the highlights: a garden soiree at the Garfield Park Conservatory, a bike tour of Humboldt Park's community gardens and a visit to Bronzeville's food production gardens. Transportation will be provided to and from all tour sites.

Workshop topics include how to acquire land for a community garden, rainwater usage, insect management and ways to involve children in gardening that go beyond weeding and digging in the dirt.

With the early-bird discount, the cost of a full conference registration — workshops, tours, garden soiree, breakfast and lunch — is $240 for association members and $290 for non-members (click here to sign up). After Tuesday, the price jumps to $285 for members and $335 for non-members.
