Two Dead, at Least 36 Wounded in Citywide Violence Over the Weekend

CHICAGO — At least 36 people were shot during the last weekend in June — including 13 people shot in a violent eight-hour stretch overnight Sunday into Monday. Two people were also killed due to violence.

The violent overnight stretch began shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, when a frantic scene erupted near Montrose Harbor where two women, ages 21 and 48, were shot. The 21-year-old was shot in her shoulder and the 48-year-old woman was shot in her arm and back. Both were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital.

The most recent shooting occurred around 2 a.m. Monday, when a 21-year-old man was shot in the 3100 block of North Sheffield Avenue in Lakeview.

At the same time in West Roseland a 40-year-old man was shot in his lower left leg. He was standing in the 10600 block of South Champlain Avenue when someone opened fire. He took himself to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where his condition stabilized, said Officer Hector Alfaro, a police spokesman.

In other non-fatal shootings overnight:

• Around 1:10 a.m. Monday, a 29-year-old man was shot in the 6900 block of South Peoria Street in Englewood.

• Around 1:23 a.m., a 25-year-old woman was shot while sitting in the driver's seat of a car in the 8800 block of South Princeton Avenue in Roseland. She was taken to Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds in her upper torso and left leg, and her condition stabilized, Alfaro said.

• Around 12:05 p.m. Sunday, a 33-year-old man was shot while sitting of the passenger seat of a car in the 7800 block of South South Chicago Avenue in Avalon Park. A silver car drove up and someone inside fired shots, grazing the man in his left leg. The man refused medical attention, Alfaro said.

• Around 10 p.m. Sunday, three men were shot as they stood in the 4300 block of North Drake Avenue in Irving Park.

• Around 9:45 p.m. Sunday, a 33-year-old man was shot in the 2500 block of West Huron Street in Ukrainian Village.

• About an hour earlier, 19-year-old man was shot multiple times while walking on the sidewalk in the 4800 block of West Washington Boulevard in West Garfield Park. He was shot in the stomach, arm and leg after the 8:50 p.m. shooting. He was taken to Stroger in an unknown condition, Alfaro said.

• Around 8:15 p.m. Sunday, an 18-year-old man was shot in the 4500 block of North Broadway in Uptown.

Just after 5 p.m. Sunday, a 28-year-old man was shot in Lawndale and a 21-year-old man was shot in West Pullman.

At least nine people were shot from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning. The weekend began with 12 people being shot from Friday night into Saturday morning, including a 17-year-old boy left in critical condition after a shooting near the Rainbow/PUSH Headquarters in Bronzeville and a man shot by police after pointing a gun at officers in South Austin.

Saturday morning, Ronnie Amos, 42, of Humboldt Park was shot and killed near his home in the 3600 block of West Chicago Avenue.

Friday night, Tony Ervin, 28, of the 6000 block of South Sacramento Avenue was fatally stabbed in Chicago Lawn. Darius Smith, 23, of the 6300 block of Albany Avenue was later charged with first-degree murder after the stabbing.
