CHICAGO — A man was shot by police in the South Austin neighborhood after he led officers on a chase and then pointed a gun at police, authorities said.

About 12:35 a.m. Saturday, officers were on patrol near South Cicero Avenue and West Jackson Boulevard when they heard gunshots and then saw a car traveling at a high rate of speed, said Pat Camden, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police.

Officers tried to curb the vehicle, according to a police statement, and after a brief chase, the passenger of the car got out near South Lavergne Avenue and West Adams Street, Camden said.

After the officers told the man to stop, he pointed a gun in their direction, causing them to shoot, Camden said. The man then fled on foot.
