CHICAGO — Proceeds from the Chicago Math and Science Academy's Thursday spring concert will go to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

The charity was chosen through a vote among the students, who were required to research and pitch organizations that the money could be donated to, academy music director Shanova Vincent said. The concert is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the school, 7212 N. Clark St. The Cadet Band, Concert Band and Beginning Choir will perform.

Vincent said tickets would be sold at the door for $5 or $3 for children ages 12 and younger. That money will be added to a pool from a car wash and a Dress-Down Day when students paid $2 to dress casually at school.

"A couple of the students had been impacted by cancer and they realized the kids [at St. Jude's] are so close to their age that they just wanted to do something and give back," Vincent said.

The concerts have been held for years, but last year was the first time the event was used to raise money for charity, Vincent said. Last year's charity was CeaseFire.

"Oh my gosh, I would love to raise about $1,000 for St. Jude's," Vincent said. "Last year, I think we raised about $700."
