CHICAGO — Chicago Police and Firefighters risk their lives every day in the name of public safety, but next week they'll engage in a gluttonous battle for a good cause.

On May 21, the cops will take on the blaze battlers at WingMadness, a two-event competition to determine the best pound-for-pound chicken wing consumers in each department.

The first event — "How Many Wings Can You Eat?" — is all about speed, pitting firefighter against policeman in a timed competition, where the top cop and fireman then face off in a final battle.

The second event — "How Hot Can You Go?" — forces participants to battle sauces that get hotter as they advance. The featured sauces, which are all original recipes from Dick's Last Resort, include: Can You Take The Heat; Blistering Insanity; Nuclear Nightmare; and The Hell Mouth.

Judges for the competition include City Clerk Susana Mendoza, British Consul General Stephen Bridges, Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd)  and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White.

A Lake Michigan dinner cruise for eight on a yacht will be raffled off, and a silent auction will also take place at WingMadness. All proceeds from the event benefit Easter Seals Metropolitan Chicago, which maximizes independence and creates opportunities for people with disabilities or other special needs.

Tickets for the benefit are $25 if purchased before May 19; after that standard admission, which includes a dinner buffet and access to the cash bar, is $30. Special VIP Tickets are $50 and include VIP admission, raffle packages and more.

Doors open at Dick's Last Resort, 315 N. Dearborn St., at 5:30 p.m., and the competition begins at 6 p.m.
