HYDE PARK — Murray Language Academy is changing its start and end times by 15 minutes next year in an effort to better coordinate school buses.

The local school council approved the measure, which came with a promised $81,000 in additional funding from Chicago Public Schools, at its Thursday night meeting at the 5335 S. Kenwood Ave.

Under the changes, Murray’s school day will start at 8:30 a.m. instead of 8:15 a.m. and will end 3:30 p.m. instead of 3:15 p.m. next year.

“Murray would get about $81,000 in extra funds in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 budget cycles — $54,000 in 2014-15 and $27,000 in 2015-16 — if we push back our start of school time,” Principal Greg Mason wrote in notice to parents.

The money would come from the savings from better coordinating buses with Ray Elementary School, Mason says in the notice. He said the parents were surveyed about the change and the local school council would ultimately approve whether the schedule is changed.

Murray will continue to open its doors at 8 a.m. during days of severe weather.
