EDGEWATER — Ald. Harry Osterman (48th) is warning residents of a suspected "intruder" who was found Saturday morning taking photos inside Emanuel Congregation Synagogue on Sheridan Road.

But the intentions of the man — who had long white hair — were unclear, said Officer Veejay Zala, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

Osterman warned constituents Wednesday in an email to watch out for other suspicious behavior and to contact police if they saw something unusual.

An employee of the synagogue, at 5959 N. Sheridan Road, discovered the man about 11 a.m. Saturday taking photos and told him to stop, said Zala. The man then left the building and drove away in a silver Chevrolet Silverado with no plates, police said.

The synagogue employee described the man as being in his mid-40s, about 6 feet tall with long white hair and wearing a gray jacket, police said.

"What he was up to, if anything, is unclear," Zala said, adding that there was no sign of criminal behavior.

Ben Davis, the synagogue's director, said he had been "directed by law enforcement" to not make any comment about the incident, citing an ongoing investigation.
