Wicker Area Weekend: Renegade Craft Fair, Hideout Party Anchor and More

WICKER PARK —   The A.V/Hideout Block Party and Renegade Craft Fair anchor a busy weekend packed with art openings and college and NFL football games in the Wicker Park, Bucktown and Ukrainian Village neighborhoods.

Friday

4:30 p.m.  Opening night of A.V./Hideout Block Party.  Headliners Neko Case (8:45 p.m.) and Mavis Staples (7:30 p.m.) kick off a two-day block party. Tickets range between $35 and $70. The Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia Ave. in east Bucktown.

6 to 10 p.m.   First Friday at the Flat Iron Arts Building. On the first Friday of every month, the Flat Iron Arts building at the Milwaukee, Damen and North avenues intersection opens its doors for a night of open arts studios and performances. The evening is free but a suggested donation of $5 benefits the nonprofit building. 1579 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park.

6 to 9 p.m.  Simon Gallo's "Goofball Armada" show. One Strange Bird welcomes artist Simon Gallo with an opening reception.  Primarily a printmaker who also produces paintings and drawings, Gallo says his work credits comic books, toys, TV and movies among its influences. One Strange Bird, 2124 W. Division St. in Wicker Park.

7 to 10 p.m.  "Everything Encaustic II." An exclusively encaustic art show featuring wax-based artwork comes back to a local gallery. The new exhibition showcases the works of five artists (Jane Michalski, Martha Ceccio, Kathleen Waterloo, Emily Rutledge and Julia Ris). Park Schreck Gallery, 1747 W. North Ave. in Wicker Park.

Saturday

9 a.m., 11 a.mMagic Boat Puppet Show.  The puppet show featuring "Brother Bear" and "Brother Rabbit" returns to Wicker Park for two free performances at 9 and 11 a.m. Find the action near the park playground at 1425 N. Damen Ave.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m. BBQ, Beer and Bears Brunch.  Sports fans are invited to partake in college and NFL games along with $12 Pulled Pork Benedicts, $8 Biscuits & Gravy, and $8 "Elvis" Fried Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches.  Smoke Daddy, 1804 W. Division St. in Wicker Park.

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cabbage Buns (runza) and Prix-Fixe Brunch. Celebrating a new allegiance to the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers during college football season, Division Ale House plans to offer Elk Creek cocktails and runzas, also known as bierocks or cabbage buns. 2 to 5 p.m.  Art, Puppies and Greyhounds Meet and Greet. Artist Kate Hoyer who paints dogs by commission is the featured guest at an event which welcomes dogs and their owners. A local greyhound rescue will be bringing along some pups who need a good home too. Jackson Junge Gallery, 1389 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park.

11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Renegade Craft Fair takes place Saturday and Sunday along Division Street from Damen Avenue to Wood Street.  On tap are more than 300 indie crafter from around the country as well as a vintage pop-up market, food and music. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Nosh, a weekly artisan food festival, lands in the parking lot of Pritzker School in Wicker Park and offers sandwiches, lobster rolls, tamales, sweets, cold soups and more.  Pritzker School, 2009 W. Schiller St. Free.

12:30 p.mThe A.V./Hideout Block Party.  Eight performances including headliners Young the Giant (9 p.m.) and The Hold Steady (7:45 p.m.) take the spotlight at a popular annual block party. Tickets range between $35-70. The Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia Ave. in east Bucktown.

7 to 11 p.m.  "Might" by Miguel Guzman.  Live music by Passerines, beer from Allagash Brewery and food from Yizu Sushi and Robata Grill are planned for an opening reception featuring new works by Guzman, a mixed-media artist influenced by Nationalism, economic and military rivalry, war and environmental disaster.  Paperish Mess, 1955 W. Chicago Ave. in Ukrainian Village.

Sunday

8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wicker Park Farmers Market.  Go early for the best picks (like Chef Rick Bayless did recently when he tweeted a video of his "phenomenal haul" from the market), which features several vendors offering fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses, flowers and crepes. The market is located at 1501 N. Damen Ave.

10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  BBQ, Bear and Beers Brunch at Smoke Daddy.

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cabbage Buns (runza) and Prix-Fixe Brunch at Division Ale House.

11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Renegade Craft Fair on Division Street between Damen Avenue and Wood Street.

7:30 p.mThat's All She Wrote Storytelling.  A non-competitive gathering for storytellers of all stripes, this free, BYOB show takes place on the second Sunday of every month. Swim Café, 1357 W. Chicago Ave. in West Town/Noble Square.
