THE LOOP —  A 22-year-old man suffered serious injuries when he was hit by a car near Millennium Park early Sunday, police said.

The man was crossing Columbus Drive at South Water Street at about 2 a.m. when he was hit by a 1988 Oldsmobile coupe traveling northbound, said Officer Daniel O’Brien, a police spokesman.

The victim was taken in serious condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with injuries to his head and torso, O’Brien said.

The driver, identified as Phillip Beverly, 34, of the 7500 block of South King Drive, told police he had a green light when the victim crossed into the street. Beverly said he was unable to avoid striking the man, O’Brien said.

Beverly was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. He was cited for failure to exercise due to care with a pedestrian in the roadway, O’Brien said.
