CHICAGO — A woman accidentally shot herself in the hand Thursday morning in Chicago Lawn, police said.

The 18-year-old woman was handling the gun when it discharged, striking her, police said. Police initially said the woman was 16 years old. The incident happened near 69th and Rockwell streets about 11 a.m., police said.

The woman initially told police a man shot her before admitting that she found the gun and accidentally shot herself, police said.

The woman was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition, police said.
