CHICAGO — A 33-year-old suburban man has died of injuries sustained after sideswiping a car while cycling in Portage Park Monday.

The man — identified as Rafael Ramirez — had been heading north on North Central Avenue when he tried to turn left onto West Addison Street about 2:15 p.m. Monday, said Officer Jose Estrada, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

Ramirez sideswiped a 1999 Saturn that was heading west on Addison, according to several witnesses. Because the Saturn had the right-of-way, Estrada said, no ticket was issued.

Ramirez suffered serious head injuries and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died at 2 a.m. Wednesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

It was unclear whether Ramirez, who lived in the 7200 block of West Diversey Avenue in suburban Elmwood Park, was wearing a helmet, Estrada said.
