NEW CITY — Police are questioning a man in connection with a July 8 attack on a pregnant woman that caused her to deliver a stillborn baby.

Police confirmed early Thursday morning they are questioning a man in connection with the attack but did not provide further details.

The Back of the Yards woman told police she was attacked about 11 p.m. by several women and one man in the 4800 block of South Laflin Street.

The woman said she was asked what gang she was affiliated with before the attack, police said. Police said they did not have information suggesting the woman belonged to a gang, but her boyfriend is a known gang member in the area.

The woman, who lives in the 4700 block of South Paulina Street, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where she delivered a stillborn baby the next day, police said.

The baby was pronounced dead at 2:44 p.m. July 9 at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. Officials there said "maternal assault" contributed to the baby's death.

The woman was more than 7½ months pregnant, according to the morgue.
