CHICAGO — Police are warning residents of an increase in robberies on the South Side and an increase in burglaries on the West side.

In Garfield Ridge, a gunman has entered businesses and confronted customers outside, showing them a dark-colored handgun and demanding money, police said.

The armed robberies occurred at 7:19 p.m. May 3 in the 5800 block of South Archer Avenue and about 9:40 p.m. Wednesday in the 4600 block of South Cicero Avenue, according to a business and community alert.

The man is generally described as black, between 28 and 40 years old, between 5-foot-11 and 6-foot-3 and weighing between 170 and 190 pounds, officials said.

Police ask anyone with information to call 312-747-8380.

Police are also warning Near West Side residents of an increase in burglaries during May.

In the incidents, burglars enter homes through the back doors during the day and steal items.

The burglaries occurred Monday in the 500 block of North Armour Street and 1500 block of West Fry Street and Tuesday in the 1500 block of West Ohio Street, police said.
