CHICAGO — A man was shot in Auburn Gresham Thursday evening during what appeared to be an attempted robbery, police said.

The victim, 28, was shot in the stomach about 6:50 p.m. in the area of West 87th Street and South Racine Avenue, police said.

The man's white conversion van came to a stop in the middle of the intersection, its driver's side window was shattered.

An employee at the nearby Marathon gas station said he saw the van speeding south on Racine Avenue before abruptly coming to a stop in the intersection.

Residents said it appeared the man was shot in his vehicle at a nearby location, but police did not know anything more about the incident.

The man was taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center, officials said.

No further details were immediately available.
