CHICAGO — An Auburn Gresham woman was killed Friday when the Pace bus she was on swerved to avoid a pedestrian and slammed into a light pole in Canaryville, police said.

Ella Williams, 58, of the 1700 block of West 85th Street, was a passenger in a bus traveling south on Halsted Street in the 4600 block about 12:35 p.m., police said.

When someone ran into the street, the bus driver swerved to avoid hitting the pedestrian and crashed into a city lightpole. There was "extensive damage" to the bus and pole, officials said.

Williams sustained injuries, police said. She was pronounced dead at 1:32 p.m. at Stroger Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.
