Travel Woes Pile Up With the Snow

CHICAGO — After Tuesday's snowstorm canceled hundreds of flights, postponed after-school activities and dumped nearly 5 inches on the city, more flights were canceled Wednesday, and some snow accumulation is expected to continue.

The National Weather Service canceled Tuesday's winter weather advisory, but the agency expects about 1-2 inches more snow Wednesday.

More than 70 flights were canceled at O'Hare Wednesday morning due to snow cleanup, according to the city's Aviation Department. Some Midway flights were also canceled, and both airports were experiencing minor delays, the department said.

The wet, slushy snow made visibility difficult for drivers and led to some crashes on the roadways. An Emergency Snow Plan by the Illinois State Police warned drivers that the police were not taking accident reports for minor crashes Tuesday afternoon. Drivers involved in fender-benders were told to exchange information with other drivers and report the accident within 10 days.

The wet snow and high winds forced the cancellation of more than 500 flights at Chicago airports Tuesday.

By Wednesday morning, about 5.3 inches of snow was measured at O'Hare.

The city worked on plowing and salting roads as rain and wet snow fell. Chicago had more than 284 snow plows out and about 26 smaller plows to clear side streets and cul-de-sacs by Wednesday morning, according to the city's Plow Tracker

Periods of light snow can be expected, with a high of about 36 degrees for the day, according to the weather service. That means more wet, slushy snow, with flurries possible as winds reach 10 to 20 mph.
