CHICAGO — A man accidentally shot himself in the leg on the South Side Sunday evening, cops said.

The 47-year-old man reportedly told cops he was cleaning his gun when he shot himself in the leg, said officer Robert Perez, a Chicago police spokesman. Perez said the incident happened about 6 p.m. in the 8500 block of South Kolmar Avenue, in the Scottsdale neighborhood.

The man managed to get to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he underwent surgery, Perez said. Perez said police were called to the hospital a few hours after the incident.

It appeared that the man had proof of valid registration for the gun, and that it was a "noncriminal, accidental injury," Perez said.
