Blackhawks Set NHL Record with Victory over Sharks

By Justin Breen | February 23, 2013 8:39am

CHICAGO — The Chicago Blackhawks beat the San Jose Sharks 2-1 on Friday night at the United Center to set an NHL record by earning a point in their 17th straight game to start the regular season.

The Blackhawks (14-0-3) still haven't lost in 60 minutes during this lockout-shortened season, breaking the Anaheim Ducks' mark set during the 2006-07 campaign, a year the Ducks won the Stanley Cup.

Brandon Saad scored the game-winning goal shorthanded early in the third period, while Ray Emery made 26 saves to improve to 7-0-0.

Viktor Stalberg had the other Chicago goal.

"It's kind of crazy to think you're not going to lose a game in regulation for the first 17 games," Stalberg told NHL.com.

Patrick Marleau scored San Jose's lone tally.

The Blackhawks have a chance to add to their record Sunday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

"There's no looking back. We want to keep winning," Stalberg told NHL.com. "If we keep playing the way we have been, we'll be in a good spot to keep winning. Obviously a loss is going to come at some point, but we want to try to get as many points as possible."

Surprisingly, the Hawks aren't even halfway to the longest single-season unbeaten stretch in NHL history, the 35-game streak set by the Philadelphia Flyers during the 1979-80 season.
