ROGERS PARK — Anton Sanders had permission to spend the night at a friend’s house. After he left his Skokie home, his grandmother never saw him again.

The 15-year-old was gunned down January 20 in the 1800 block of Juneway Terrace, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The gunman was apparently Dante Simmons, who later was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to published reports from January. Simmons is also suspected of killing Troy Cameron in a River North Walgreens.

The week he was killed, Sanders had just started at a new school in Skokie where he was a sophomore, his grandmother, Everlena Sanders said.

His grandmother, who was the teen’s legal guardian, said he loved football and basketball and played in the Skokie Park District league.

He was also trying to find work at a suburban country club as a caddy.

“I felt like he had something to offer to the world,” Everlena Sanders said.

“My heart bleeds,” she said. “It hurts everyday to even think someone could take my baby’s life like that.”
