CHICAGO — A second person was charged with being part of a crew that stole American Apparel clothes from a Gold Coast store and then allegedly tried to run down a police officer, prosecutors said.
Michael Holmes, 20, was among several individuals who robbed the American Apparel store near the intersection of Walton Street and Michigan Avenue on Nov. 1, prosecutors said during a Sunday bond hearing.
The group grabbed thousands of dollars in merchandise and jumped into a getaway car, police and prosecutors said. A police officer tried to block their escape, but the driver allegedly accelerated toward him.
While diving out of the way of the vehicle, the officer fired one shot into the car, but no one was hit, prosecutors said.
Holmes, of the 8400 block of South Exchange Street in South Chicago, appeared in bond court Sunday wearing a black and gold hoodie and matching pants from Victoria's Secret "PINK" collection. He was ordered held without bond on the attempted murder charge.
Holmes was in the backseat when the car almost hit the officer, prosecutors said.
Another one of the defendants in the case, a 17-year-old male, was charged with attempted murder of a peace officer last week. He was not the driver of the car either.
According to prosecutors, the two are in custody and warrants have been issued for additional suspects.
