CHICAGO — Two 14-year-olds were shot Saturday evening while walking down a South Side street, police said.

Three teens were walking in the 7700 block of South Carpenter Street when they heard shots fired near 78th and Carpenter streets, said Officer Robert Perez of Chicago Police News Affairs. They began to run for cover when two of the teens realized they had been hit, Perez said.

A 14-year-old girl was shot in the leg and a 14-year-old boy was hit in the buttocks, Perez said. Both teens were taken to Comer Children's Hospital in good condition. A 15-year-old who was with the teens was not injured, Perez said.

The wounded girl's mother told the Chicago Tribune that she frequently witnesses drug and gang activity in the area, but she did not know why someone would fire at her child.

No one was in custody Sunday morning, Perez said.
