Woman Charged with Murder in 14-story Plunge of Woman Delivering Presents

By William Gorta | March 31, 2012 3:32pm

The mother of a 3-year-old girl was charged with murder and manslaughter in the death of a woman who plummeted 14 floors after delivering a birthday present to the tot from her father.

Police arrested Kenya Edmonds, 23, Friday night after Sienna Edwards was found dead outside 750 E. 179th St. in East Tremont on Thursday.

Edwards was delivering the presents as a favor to the father because Edmonds, the child’s mother, has an order of protection against him.

When Edwards arrived at the 14th floor apartment to make the drop-off, she called 911 but didn’t say anything, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Friday.

“In the background, there are voices that say, ‘You’re not going to leave here alive,’” Kelly said.

She also managed to call her boyfriend and tell him she was in danger, the Daily News reported.

“When she called me, she said they had a knife to her neck,” the boyfriend, Timothy Smith, 23, told the paper.  “I called her back 50 times, but I never heard back from her.”

What happened next is unclear, but detectives believe Edwards, 20, may have fallen as she tried to escape to the knife-wielding women, the New York Times reported.

“At this point, the detectives believe she may have fallen trying to get to the next balcony — climbing from one balcony to the next — trying to get away from the women who were threatening to kill her,” police spokesman Paul Browne told the Times.

About 10 minutes after the fall, Edmonds called 911 to report that Edwards had jumped from the balcony, sources said.

Edmonds was awaiting arraignment Saturday on charges of second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter.
