MANHATTAN — Jill Abramson has been named the new executive editor of the New York Times, the paper announced.

She replaces Bill Keller, who is stepping down to become a writer for the paper, the Times reported.

Abramson, 57, has been managing editor of the Times since 2003. She said rising to the top job at the Times, after being a reporter and Washington Bureau Chief there, was like "ascending to Valhalla," the paper reported.

She will be the first woman to have the top job at the paper.

"Congrats to Jill Abramson, a triumph for women in media and a great day for readers of the Times," tweeted Tina Brown, the editor of Newsweek and The Daily Beast.

Abramson's appointment is effective Sept. 6. In another move, Washington Bureau Chief Dean Baquet will become the paper's managing editor.

"Jill and Dean together is a powerful team," Keller told the Times.
