MANHATTAN — The city's making no bones about what can happen if motorists speed.
A new campaign to slow down city traffic will feature traffic signs with flashing skeletons, the New York Post reported.
The theory is that drivers will be scared into slowing down.
The images will be part of radar-equipped boards that currently flash drivers' speeds.
When they clock a car going too fast, an image of a pedestrian crossing a street will change to a skeleton, accompanied by the words "SLOW DOWN."
The city hasn't announced where the boards will be used, said the Post.
"If you save one life, it's one of the more brilliant ideas ever heard," Mayor Bloomberg said at a press conference Thursday, according to the Post.
"At least we're trying to save lives rather than just sitting around complaining and saying people should (save lives)."
The newspaper said there were 271 traffic related deaths in the city last year.
