MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — Former WABC weather anchor Heidi Jones, who's charged with making up a fake rape story, is working out a possible plea deal with prosecutors, her lawyer said Wednesday.

"We're involved in active discussion about a possible resolution in this case," defense attorney Paul Callan said at Jones' brief appearance in Manhattan Criminal Court.

He would not elaborate on the details of the discussions when asked by reporters.

Jones, 37, allegedly admitted to making up a story that an attacker tried to rape her in Central Park and then stalked her.

When she allegedly reported the Sept. 24 incident, police scoured the area trying to find an assailant who apparently didn't exist.  Statements she later provided to police about that incident, and another that allegedly occured on Nov. 21, aroused investigators' suspicious about her story, leading to her admission.

"I did make this up. I made it up for attention," she told police, according to court documents. "I have so much stress at work, with my personal life and with my family. I know there is no justification for it."

Jones, was arrested in December, is due back in court on May 4. She was suspended from the station when the allegations surfaced.
