MANHATTAN — A former city official who helped transform Union Square in recent years through his work with the local business improvement district is moving on to Greenwich Village.

William Kelley, current director of economic development for the Union Square Partnership, has been tapped to take over as executive director of the Village Alliance business improvement district, it was announced Tuesday.

Kelley formerly worked as vice president for the city's Economic Development Corporation, where he managed development projects in lower Manhattan and along the Brooklyn waterfront, before moving to the Union Square Partnership.

He succeeds founding Village Alliance BID director Honi Klein, who is retiring after 18 years at the helm.

At the post, Kelley will primarily focus on Greenwich Village business interests, especially along the heavily commercial 8th Street corridor.

During his time with the Union Square Partnership, he helped implement reconstruction of the park's northern end, a traffic redesign on Broadway at 17th Street, and tree-pit enhancements on 14th Street, according to a statement announcing the hire.

"The Village Alliance has been the standard bearer for the 8th Street and Central Village business community for nearly 20 years," Kelley said in the statement. "I am honored to join the team, and eager to build on that rich history to help take the organization to the next level."

The Village Alliance BID, founded in 1993, provides additional public safety, sanitation and economic development services across the 40-block district, which roughly stretches from Third to Sixth avenues in the Village.
