INWOOD — Women are preparing to take a free self-defense class provided by the Guardian Angels on Friday evening, after rising concerns about public safety in Upper Manhattan.

The citizen patrol group offered the class to a group of women in the area who expressed interest in learning self-defense after a mother was mugged in Inwood Hill Park while walking with her 17-month-old child in early November.

The Guardian Angels recently joined forces with the Inwood Safety Patrol, a local citizen safety group, to do foot patrols of the neighborhood together.

The office of Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat worked with the group to find a free community space for the group and a spokeswoman said the office would continue to work with the community to provide future self-defense training.

The class will be held at 210 Sherman Avenue, between 204th and 207th streets, Friday Dec. 3, between 6 and 8 p.m. Because of limited space, the class will be limited to 10 students, who are asked to reserve a spot by e-mailing npryadko@hotmail.com.
