LOWER MANHATTAN — A woman died after she was pulled from the harbor near Governors Island following a jump from the Staten Island Ferry late Monday afternoon, police said.
The unidentified 30-year-old woman was retrieved from the water about 5:45 p.m. by a Staten Island Ferry rescue boat and transferred to an NYPD boat, police and the Coast Guard said.
The woman was given CPR at the Battery pier and then transported to New York Downtown Hospital, the Coast Guard and police said. She was pronounced dead Monday evening.
Police said it appeared that the woman had jumped from the ferry.
A person aboard the ferry — the Guy V Molinari, which was bound for S.I. — witnessed the woman jump and told a crew member, according to sources.
Last month a woman was rescued after jumping from the Staten Island ferry, and in 2004, actor Spalding Gray is believed to have died after he jumped off the ferry.
The Medical Examiner's office said the cause of death was drowning. The manner of death was ruled a suicide.
