MANHATTAN — Ever been charged too much for a cab ride?

Microsoft’s Bing Maps includes a new cab fare calculator that estimates what riders should pay for a ride based on pick-up fees, time and distance. It can also be used to find the shortest route to make sure cabbies don’t take the long way on purpose.

The cab fare calculator was developed as part of a Bing Map application competition, Gizmodo reported.

Although the app is currently available, users must have the latest version of Microsoft's Silverlight, as well as search for and add in the app, according to PC World.

The only down side seems to be that there is no phone application yet available for the program. So unless riders have their laptops with them the calculator might not be of much use during a ride.

Too soon to know if Google will respond with their own version.
