MANHATTAN — Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter donned a No. 55 Yankees jersey, grabbed a paintbrush and went to work in New York City on Friday, his penance for losing a World Series bet to Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
“The Phillies were a tough team, but I knew Mayor Nutter was going to end up looking great in pinstripes,” Bloomberg joked.
Nutter and Bloomberg agreed in October that the mayor of the losing city’s team would wear the uniform of the winner and participate in a volunteer project in the rival city. Nutter, wearing World Series MVP Hideki Matsui’s number, made good on the bet Friday and joined Bloomberg to help paint a public school in the Bronx.
Both mayors are founding members of a new coalition called “Cities of Service,” which aims to increase volunteer activity in cities across the country.
The Philly mayor congratulated New York on the win.
“I am sure that the team and Mayor Bloomberg will do a great job of looking after the World Series trophy until the Phillies take it back next year.”
