Governor Poised to Request Higher Construction Wages
Gov. David Paterson is preparing legislation that would mandate higher wages for construction workers on publicly-funded projects.
The proposal has drawn criticism from the Business Council of New York for penalizing job-creating companies during the recession.
Labor unions, including the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, supported the measure and said it would provide good jobs for residents. If adopted, the legislation would make businesses pay $19.20 an hour to construction workers on projects financed in part through public funds. The current New York minimum wage is $7.20 an hour.
