HUMBOLDT PARK — Principal Michelle Garcia-Jones of Chopin Elementary School has resigned, a CPS official confirmed Friday.

Though it does not appear Garcia-Jones has not made a formal announcement of her resignation, parents and teachers had been hearing murmurs in recent days that she was leaving to take a position in Las Vegas.

Garcia-Jones did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday, but a CPS official that she has indeed resigned to take a position in Las Vegas.

She apparently has family there, the official said.

Clark County School District in Las Vegas has notably been recruiting teachers from Chicago in the midst of the school closures, though spokeswoman Melinda Malone said the district has not actively been recruiting principals.

Malone also could not immediately confirm Garcia-Jones had been hired at the district.

"We don't currently have anyone by that name in our system, but that doesn't mean that we don't have something in the works," she said.

Clark County School District is the only public school district in southern Nevada, Malone said, so unless Garcia-Jones is taking a position at a private school she would be working there.

According to her Facebook page, Garcia-Jones has been principal of Chopin for one year, after spending five years at ASPIRA, which operates five charter schools in the city.

Chopin Elementary School, located at 2450 W. Rice St., is the only remaining neighborhood school in East Humboldt Park, and will serve as a welcoming school for students from Lafayette Elementary School, which closed at the end of the year.

Garcia-Jones is the second CPS principal to resign this week.

Ravenswood Elementary Principal Heather Connolly announced her resignation in an email to parents Thursday night, citing "constant turmoil" in CPS.
